Pakawau Beach is a safe, sandy swimming beach, popular with holiday makers from New Zealand and overseas. There are spectacular golden sunrises and wonderful dark skies for star gazing. Great for watersports including wakeboarding and waterskiing, the bay has dolphins, seals and abundant bird life. Pilot whales are occasional visitors to these waters. Surfing and great fishing is a short drive to the wild West Coast.
Look back to Pakawau Peak and Kahurangi National Park. Look Eastwards to Collingwood, D'urville Island and Abel Tasman National Park. Look out to Farewell Spit and toward Mount Taranaki / Egmont!
Golden Bay stretches along the coastline to the far shores of spectacular Wharariki Beach. This area has a rich social and natural history. Colourful Takaka is the principal township offering main street shopping, cafés and fresh produce. Museums in Takaka, Collingwood and Rockville trace the history of the area. Go mountainbiking on the Rameka Track, kayak on the Aorere River. Take a 4WD tour to Farewell Spit – a bird sanctuary and wetland for waders such as godwits and curlews. The Heaphy Track starts in Collingwood heading through remote native forest to the West Coast. Beachcomb for Paper Nautilus, explore the old goldfields in the Aorere Valley or enjoy the beauty of Golden Bay on horseback.
